Douloufakis Winery – Dafnios Vidiano
Douloufakis Winery is a historic family estate in Dafnes, Heraklion, Crete, with a winemaking tradition that dates back to 1930. Today, the third generation combines this heritage with modern viticulture and winemaking, placing particular emphasis on the character of indigenous Cretan grape varieties.
The winery’s vineyards lie on limestone-rich hillsides at 350–450 metres altitude, within the historic wine-growing zone of Dafnes. This distinctive terroir, together with Crete’s Mediterranean climate, creates ideal conditions for varieties such as Vidiano, Liatiko, Vilana and Kotsifali. Certified organic farming has also formed part of the estate’s philosophy since the early 2000s.
Douloufakis has played an important role in the modern revival of Vidiano, an indigenous Cretan variety that was close to disappearing when winemaker Nikos Douloufakis began replanting it around 2000. Dafnios White, produced entirely from Vidiano, expresses the variety through peach, apricot, floral and herbal aromas, balanced freshness and a rich, textured palate.
Dafnios Vidiano captures the modern identity of Cretan wine — indigenous variety, historic terroir and generations of family winemaking brought together in a distinctive expression of Crete.
